§ 4-53. Dog license required.

  • (a)

    It is unlawful for any keeper of a dog kept within the city to fail to obtain a license from the city for such dog as required pursuant to this section and thereafter to securely fasten a license tag issued by the city to the dog's collar or harness and ensure that it is kept on the dog at all times when the dog is not in the immediate physical custody and control of the keeper.

    (b)

    Every person owning or having custody of a dog which has a set of permanent canine teeth or is six months old, whichever comes first, shall immediately obtain a license for the dog by paying to the city a license fee as provided by section 4-54. Dog license fees shall be waived for an assistance dog as provided in section 4-54(d).

    (c)

    The keeper of a wolf or wolf-dog hybrid shall obtain a dog license from the county sheriff's office.

    (d)

    The offense described in this section is an Independence Municipal Code Class B violation, per section 1-22.
